"The most fundamental aggression to ourselves, the most fundamental harm we can do to ourselves is to remain ignorant by not having the courage and respect to look at ourselves honestly and gently." Pema Chodron
I had to read this quote many times to really get what Pema is saying there.
Read again before you continue here. Let it sink in for a moment.
My first reaction just after completely understanding this quote was: WOW! This is it!
The suffering I’ve been causing to myself is just because I don’t have the courage to look inside my mind in an honest and gentle way.
This is so powerful!
Stay with me here… First we cause our own pain and suffering with our thoughts and how we make the circumstances mean to us.
Then, this whole time the only thing we are trying to avoid is our real emotions, our real selves.
We avoid to look into our minds because we are too scared to what we might find, which causes us more pain, more suffering, more harm and more aggression.
There is no compassion, respect, love, honesty, knowledge towards ourselves. So we remain ignorants.
And yet, we treat people around us with more love and respect than we treat ourselves.
Why is that? What is the worst thing that can happen when we take a moment to look at ourselves?
The worst that can happen is just a feeling!
Be courageous, stop the aggression and harm for not looking and for avoiding looking at yourself.
The most amazing relationship you can ever have is with yourself, and you can’t build that if you don’t respect and love everything and anything is within you.
